How it works

What are binaural beats?

Two gentle tones, one in each ear. Your brain hears the soft difference between them as a slow pulse.

Carrier + offset

Play a steady carrier tone in one ear (say 200 Hz) and a slightly different tone in the other (210 Hz). The 10 Hz difference is perceived as a soft “beat.” It works only with headphones, because each ear must hear its own tone.

The common bands

Researchers name brain rhythms by speed. We use these names as mood settings, not promises:

Delta 0.5–4 Hz · sleepTheta 4–7 Hz · deep restAlpha 8–12 Hz · relaxed calmBeta 13–30 Hz · alert focus

Band edges vary between sources.

What the research says (honestly)

Studies are small and mixed. One 2019 review of 22 studies found a moderate overall effect, with the clearest results for feeling less anxious. Results for memory and focus were mixed. We offer our tracks as a pleasant aid to relaxation and meditation, nothing more.

How to listen

Use comfortable headphones at a low volume. Sit or lie somewhere safe. Start with 10–20 minutes. Stop if anything feels off. Never while driving.

Please read before listening

Please talk with your doctor before listening if you have epilepsy or a history of seizures, a pacemaker or other implanted device, a heart condition, a mental-health condition, are pregnant, or have any other medical concern. Rhythmic sound can affect some people in ways they don't expect.

Listen at a low volume, only while sitting or lying somewhere safe, and never while driving, operating machinery, or doing anything that needs your full attention. If you feel dizzy, anxious, disoriented, or unwell, stop right away.

By listening, you agree that you do so at your own risk and that, to the fullest extent the law allows, Quiet Constellation is not responsible for any injury, loss, or adverse effect from using these recordings. See our full Disclaimer for details.

Wesley Muoria-Chaves, music producer, writing in Metro (Jan 2023)

“I feel lighter. After a while, I realize that it’s made me feel a lot calmer.”

Nicole Díaz Rodríguez, student writer, in a one-week binaural beats diary for Her Campus (Oct 2022)

“The main effect was a sudden and deep relaxation that I wasn’t even trying for.”

Liam Shaughnessy, trying a binaural-beat recording for VICE (Nov 2015)
